How to Tag Mentions Automatically for More Efficient Monitoring

If you’re a seasoned Mention user, you already know about tags. They help you keep everything neat and tidy by categorizing mentions. If you’re working in a team and handling a lot of mentions, that’s mighty handy.

The only downside is that you’ve always had to do this manually. You browse your feed and tag mentions to move them to a specific folder. It can be a little time-consuming.

Not any more.

You don’t have to manually tag mentions anymore. Our new auto-tag feature lets you assign tags to mentions based on keywords used in them – without moving a muscle.

Mention looks through your feed, finds web and social mentions using specific terms, then puts them in special folders so you can find them easily.

No more wading through your feed looking for a specific topic. If you only have a few minutes for media monitoring, this is a lifesaver.

A few key details

We don’t want to get too technical, but there are a few things you need to know:

Basically, the rules are the same as the Mention tags you know and love. But now they’re done by magic!

Why is auto-tagging so exciting?

Tags are neat little labels that help you categorize mentions. When you’re dealing with thousands of mentions a week, they’re incredibly helpful.

And now, you can automate the whole process. No need to click on a mention and select a tag. If your mention contains certain keywords, we’ll tag it for you.

So how does this help you?

Speed up your customer support

Find complaints easily, and respond based on priority. Simply create an alert to monitor your brand, then create tags to separate mentions using keywords.

For example, let’s say you’re a marketing manager for Nike. You want to know everything said about Nike online. But your colleague is in customer support, and they need to find negative mentions quickly to be able to handle them.

You create an alert for the keyword “Nike,” but you add an auto-tag for “Customer complaints,” looking for keywords like “hate,” “broken,” “faulty,” and “shipping.” Now, every time someone posts the words “Nike” and “broken” online or on social media, these mentions will be placed in the “Customer complaints” folder for your colleague to see.

Simple!

Of course, you can do the exact same thing for positive reviews to find influencers and brand advocates saying nice things about you.

Monitor your different store locations

Major chains can be victims of their own success. Restaurants, hotels, and retail stores need to monitor their global brand reputation as well as specific locations. That’s no small task.

But it just got easier. Auto-tagging lets you drill down to specific locations, while still keeping an eye on the brand overall.

First, create a Boolean alert to monitor your brand around the world. Next, set up specific tags for each of your locations.

For instance, your main alert might be for Hilton hotels. So you create a broad alert to cover these. Then you create specific tags for each country (“Hilton France”), and use keywords for the main cities within this (“Paris,” “Lyon,” “Marseille,”).

You may even have a handful of locations within the same city. So you may want to create tags for each city, using the exact hotel names as keywords. You can be as broad or specific as you need to be.

Zoom in on specific Facebook pages or websites

Mention lets you choose to track everything said on certain websites and Facebook pages. This means that, regardless of the keywords used, you’ll see what’s posted.

That’s great when you have a lot of content to monitor, but it can be a little time-consuming.

Auto-tags let you pinpoint the most relevant conversations on these pages, so you don’t have to read every post.

So let’s say you want to monitor everything posted on your biggest competitor’s Facebook pages. But you really care about their latest product, which is similar to one of yours. You need an easy way to single out posts and comments about that product, while still tracking other conversations.

Easy. First, monitor their Facebook page with a Boolean alert. Next, create tags for the “TX1000” – or whatever boring name they’ve chosen. Now, whenever they mention it (or if their followers talk about it in the comments), you’ll have it waiting for you in a special folder.

This makes analyzing your competitors a whole lot simpler.

How to get started:

Convinced? Great! Time to set up your own auto-tags. If you have a Mention account, it’s dead simple.

First, you need to create an alert. Here’s a quick walkthrough if you haven’t done this yet:

Next, select “Edit alert” (top-left of the screen).

From here, you can rename an alert, change the keywords, and add new sources or monitored pages. You can also add tags.

Open “Tags Management” and click on “Create Tag”:

Give your tag a name. This is not the keyword, but rather a label that will help you categorize mentions. Depending on your goal, it might be something like “Positive feedback” or “Customer complaints”.

Next, choose your auto-tag settings. When these keywords are used within a mention, you want to assign your label to it.

Remember, your alerts are already based on keywords. Tags do not change the mentions you collect. But once you’ve collected mentions, tags help you to break them into segments, based on other keywords used in them.

Finally, hit “Create.”

What to do with tagged mentions

We already saw some interesting use cases above. But how can you use your tags on a day-to-day basis?

Create different folders for different users

Not every mention is relevant to every user. Your customer support manager cares about complaints and cries for help, while your marketing team may focus on feedback about their latest blog post.

Tailor your feed to the people using it thanks to auto-tagging.

Make graphs to show trends

You can filter your feed and your dashboards using tags you’ve created. So in the Listening dashboard, you can see the volume, location, and sources for any of your tags.

This is great if you’re trying to increase positive feedback for example. See whether your new marketing strategy is working by monitoring the volume of these comments over time:

Compare your tags in the Insights Center

Mention’s Insights Center lets you make custom data visualizations from scratch. This includes graphs just to compare your tags:

There are a range of visualization options including line graphs, bar charts, and stacked area graphs. As always with the Insights Center, it’s best just to play around and see what works for you.
