{"id":10973,"date":"2017-05-06T06:23:34","date_gmt":"2017-05-06T06:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mention.com\/blog\/?p=10973"},"modified":"2023-12-21T15:16:35","modified_gmt":"2023-12-21T15:16:35","slug":"influencer-outreach-examples","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/influencer-outreach-examples\/","title":{"rendered":"9 Examples of Amazing Influencer Outreach"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>We\u2019ve already published a blog post series on how not to suck at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hivency.com\/\">influencer marketing.<\/a> Today we\u2019re taking a different approach and showing you how to absolutely rock at it, with the help of a bunch of other rockstars.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We\u2019ve already shown you <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/outreach-email-reminders\/\" target=\"_blank\">ways to improve your email pitches<\/a>&nbsp;and the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/influencer-outreach-mistakes\/\" target=\"_blank\">biggest mistakes you want to avoid in your outreach<\/a>, but today we\u2019re showing you what that actually looks like \u201cout in the real world.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What influencer and marketing outreach looks like when you do it well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do that, I rounded up some of the smartest marketers in the industry (<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/inbound.org\/discuss\/best-outreach-email-youve-ever-sentreceived\" target=\"_blank\">and on Inbound.org<\/a>). But instead of your average, overdone expert round-up of quotes from marketers talking about their outreach, I\u2019m showing you the real thing!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In today\u2019s post, you can see the actual outreach emails that influential marketers have sent to <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/influencer-brand-advocates\/\" target=\"_blank\">connect with influencers<\/a>, land guest posts, and other big wins!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s kind of a lot to read through, so I\u2019ll keep my own witty and amazingly helpful comments to a minimum. A lot of these examples really speak for themselves, so instead I\u2019ll jump in to \u201cset the scene\u201d of each email and point out the best parts of each email and why they\u2019re so awesome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s get to it! <span id=\"hs-cta-wrapper-b2dd580e-767c-4a68-b224-cc4ea07f0cf6\" class=\"hs-cta-wrapper\"><span id=\"hs-cta-b2dd580e-767c-4a68-b224-cc4ea07f0cf6\" class=\"hs-cta-node hs-cta-b2dd580e-767c-4a68-b224-cc4ea07f0cf6\"><\/span><script charset=\"utf-8\" src=\"https:\/\/js.hscta.net\/cta\/current.js\">&lt;script type=\"text\/javascript\"> hbspt.cta.load(1896803, 'b2dd580e-767c-4a68-b224-cc4ea07f0cf6', {}); <\/script><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Influencer outreach examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. The round-up invite<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Let&#8217;s start with the &#8220;<em>Expert Round-up<\/em>&#8220;. They\u2019re kind of a tricky piece of content &#8211; when they work, they can pay off really well for everyone involved. But they\u2019re basically everywhere and not everyone is doing them well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That means that influencers are likely somewhat disenchanted with getting invited to participate in expert round-ups. Take the biggest influencer you know, and I would say they\u2019ve been invited to be quoted in at least once in the past week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So when you do reach out to someone about a round-up, it needs to be great. It needs to give them a reason to pay attention to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how Vijay Khandekar, a growth marketer at <em><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/serped.net\/\" target=\"_blank\">SERPed.net<\/a><\/em>, did it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/serped_outreach.jpg\" alt=\"Influencer Outreach\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 961px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 961\/677;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it worked:<\/strong>&nbsp;by mentioning the names of other VIPs that had already agreed to submit a quote, Vijay added social proof that this isn\u2019t just another round-up of \u201cso-so\u201d content that will get a few reads before falling off the face of the content earth. A post with the influencers mentioned is gonna get out there!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. \u201cNotice me, Neil Patel\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This might be the most creative outreach we\u2019re featuring today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Andy Crestodina, co-founder and strategic director at <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.orbitmedia.com\" target=\"_blank\">Orbit Media<\/a>, was determined to connect with Neil Patel a few years ago for a piece of content.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of the most visible marketing influencers, a regular outreach email would just be one of hundreds. Instead, he pitched a guest post and sent that over, outlining all the details of why Neil should be paying attention to him!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI wrote a blog post called \u20186 Reasons Neil Patel Should Call Me\u2019 and had one of his editors send it to him. I really don&#8217;t remember what happened next. I think I just wanted a short quote from him and he happily provided one. But it was definitely a serious\/awesome outreach email,\u201d Andy told me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s that post:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201c<strong>6 Reasons Why Neil Patel Should Call Me<\/strong><\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Every piece of content has a target audience. Usually, it\u2019s a group of people relevant to the business. Sometimes, the target is more focussed. In this case, it\u2019s very focussed. The target audience for this blog post is one person: Neil Patel.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Why hasn\u2019t Neil called? Well, he\u2019s a busy guy. I get that. But if he\u2019s going to pick up the phone and dial, here are a few reasons he should consider calling me:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>1. I plugged his product in Inc Magazine<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>When Inc. Magazine called, I was happy to gush about Crazy Egg. This was way back in 2011.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>2. I drive 12,000+ visits\/month to his websites<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I\u2019ve written several high-ranking guest posts for KISSmetrics. My post on Google Authorship ranks #1 in Google for the topic:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>3. I\u2019ve mentioned him countless presentations.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I do a lot of teaching and speaking. When I do, I often mention Crazy Egg. I also sometimes teach the web marketing tricks I\u2019ve learned on Neil\u2019s sites. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>4. I\u2019ve written posts about Neil<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I recently wrote a post specifically about Mr. Patel. It was a summary of a presentation I went to. There were half a dozen speakers, but I was there to hear Neil. He didn\u2019t disappoint.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>5. We have a lot in common<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We\u2019re both web marketers, compulsive bloggers, and analytics geeks.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>What would we talk about?<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>It would probably be a short, casual conversation.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Websites are marketing tools, but they\u2019re also networking tools. Although my focus here is ridiculously narrow, this post is an example of how content can connect people.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Every good post ends with a call-to-action. Here\u2019s mine: give me a call sometime. XXX.XXX.XXXX.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it worked:<\/strong>&nbsp;I mean, this is obvious. This is some next-level outreach and creativity and focuses less on what Andy wanted out of the situation (which we already taught you not to do!) and focused on why Neil should care. Beyond that basic, I doubt many influencers receive emails like this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. The pre-outreach outreach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m a big fan of using multiple platforms to <a href=\"\/?page_id=8259\">connect with influencers<\/a> &#8211; it shows connection, gets your face out there (in front of theirs), and can be a great way to build a longer-term relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it needs to be done carefully &#8211; if you send someone an Insta DM, tweet, Facebook message, LinkedIn request, and email pitch all containing the same \u201cWanna be in my roundup?\u201d message, you\u2019re going to seriously annoy people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key is to use different channels at different times, like how Goran Mirkovic, digital marketing specialist at <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/fourdots.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Four Dots<\/a>, use social media to introduce himself to influencers, then followed up with this email giving them all the deets:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/pasted-image-0-1.png\" alt=\"influencer outreach examples\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 760px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 760\/380;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it works:<\/strong>&nbsp;In our last post about outreach, we talked about which platforms are best for pitching an actual collaboration or making an \u201cask\u201d from an influencer. Email is almost always best, but connecting on social first can warm up a cold lead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By the time Goran emailed these influencers with a longer message containing the details, they had already agreed or expressed interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Short and sweet<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I think some big kudos need to go to a 4-line email that got results. We\u2019re all great marketers and content creators here, but it\u2019s a huge challenge to convince someone in four sentences. I don\u2019t think I could do it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then again, Matt Ambrose of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/copywriterscrucible.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Copywriter\u2019s Crucible<\/a>&nbsp;is a direct response copywriter, so this is his jam. Here\u2019s what he can do:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>&#8220;Hi Brian,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>We have two things in common:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>1) An admiration for Churchill<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>2) We both posted about what he could teach us about marketing this week:<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em><a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/copywriterscrucible.com\/sir-winston-churchills-4-iron-clad-rules-of-persuasive-copywriting\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sir Winston Churchill\u2019s \u20184 Iron Clad Rules\u2019 of Persuasive Copywriting<\/a>&#8221; &nbsp;<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it works:<\/strong>&nbsp;Well, timing does play a part here &#8211; they wrote about the same topic the same week, clearly they had to become friends. But Matt also says \u201cthis email got me an interview for a $15k mastermind group with one of the top players in the direct response world.\u201d That takes more than good timing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Matt established a shared interest right away and didn\u2019t waste anyone\u2019s time saying more than he needed to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other marketing outreach examples<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Since not all the examples we received were <em>directly <\/em>related to <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/influencer-brand-advocates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">influencer marketing<\/a>, but were still great and can be used for inspiration, we decided to include a few other examples of just generally amazing emails, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. \u201cYou impressed my boss\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jo\u00e3o Aguiar, SEO manager at <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mobidea.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mobidea<\/a>, took an approach to flattery that I haven\u2019t seen before, while also adding in a lot of relatability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHi Karl,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I trust you\u2019re fine!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>My boss has told me about an article (10 Most Common Technical SEO Issues) that&#8217;s on your blog and I really enjoyed reading it. I remember struggling with #8 Href lang tags when implementing it on my clients\u2019 sites. I felt a little bit nervous at that time!<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Anyway, I mentioned your article in one of my posts, as it fits in well and makes a lot of sense to me, considering my target audience. Here\u2019s what you\u2019re missing out on<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Jason Quey of <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestorytellermarketer.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Storyteller Marketer<\/a>&nbsp;is one of the first people I think of when I think of influencer marketing experts, I was really interested in seeing his approach to a different kind of outreach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a template for what he\u2019s sent to prospects before:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cHi FIRST,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>CONTEXT<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I&#8217;d love the opportunity to work with you, so I made a personal video to show you how COMPANY could gain an extra 50K visitors\/month in a year through content marketing.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>I estimate you&#8217;d make $216K in year 1, and $2.9MM in year 3. The video links to something I created just for them.\u201d I can\u2019t agree more &#8211; regular readers know that I love templates&#8230; <em>as a starting point.<\/em>&nbsp;They save you time writing the same info over and over again, and that\u2019s great. You can use that saved time to make the other, customized parts even more personal, like by creating a custom video!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Pitchtertainment<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Gigi Rogers, marketing manager at Strikingly, totally gets my need for marketing to still be fun. I look forward to hearing from you ladies in the near future.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>That Doritos and confetti based life-form at Strikingly,<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Gigi <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it works:<\/strong>&nbsp;there\u2019s just SO much of Gigi\u2019s awesome personality in here. It\u2019ll immediately endear the recipient. How can you read it and not want to reply, work with her, and throw confetti with her? Yet it still manages to include all the important details and benefits for the recipient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. The songwriting seller<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Here we have another EXTREMELY fun outreach email <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.yesware.com\/blog\/personal-selling\" target=\"_blank\">from an account executive named Luke at Yesware<\/a>&nbsp;(submitted by Sr. Content Marketing Strategist Elise Musumano).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, this takes talent. I try to write songs <em>all the time<\/em>, and they\u2019re awful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this AE wrote a whole song verse for his email:<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/pasted-image-0.png\" alt=\"9 Examples of Amazing Influencer Outreach - Calendar\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 760px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 760\/460;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it worked:<\/strong>&nbsp;oh, so many reasons! First, he did his research well enough to know that Linda likes Luke Bryan, so kudos for that. Then going to the effort to write this song shows some serious dedication, and establishes right away that he\u2019ll be fun to talk to and work with. He also included the other important information a good pitch needs. Finally, I can guarantee you no other sales pitches had customized song lyrics &#8211; Linda will remember this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. The one that worked on me<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, let\u2019s look at a pitch from this very blog! Andrea Lehr, Brand Relationship Strategist at <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"http:\/\/www.frac.tl\/\" target=\"_blank\">Fractl<\/a>, sends amazing emails. Obviously, they work for us and she\u2019s been featured by a lot of people who clearly feel the same.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s how she pitched us her post about decoding viral content:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/05\/pasted-image-0-2.png\" alt=\"influencers outreach\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" class=\"lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 913px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 913\/517;\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Why it works:<\/strong>&nbsp;the most important thing is that both ideas she\u2019s pitching are really great ideas with interesting studies and data to back them up.
