As in, a real, <em>meaningful<\/em> difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are organizations out there making big changes in the world. We know this because we&#8217;re lucky enough to work with some of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So we\u2019re going to take a look at a few of these extraordinary organizations, and show you how Mention helps them execute their important missions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ecosia<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Ecosia, the search engine that plants trees\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/zo93M_6Xl50?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecosia.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Ecosia<\/a> is a charitable search engine. It raises money through ad revenue, just like any other search engine. But all of this revenue goes towards planting trees around the world, with the aim of bringing water and animals back to drought-stricken areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To contribute to the cause, all you have to do is search the web with Ecosia. And there\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/info.ecosia.org\/what\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chrome extension<\/a> to make it even simpler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So where does Mention come into all this? For charities, public attention is highly competitive. Ecosia works hard to help people discover their project, and protect their reputation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Building brand awareness<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Communications Officer Jacey Bingler scours the web articles talking about Ecosia, to share and promote these stories. \u201cI can share them on our social media, which our users find amazing, and they end up sharing it, and then someone else picks it up and writes an article.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each new share leads to more visibility for the article, and Ecosia in turn. Mention allows them to share content they\u2019d otherwise never have seen. \u201cIf I didn\u2019t have Mention, I wouldn\u2019t come across those articles. As there are so many different articles and blog posts, it\u2019s just impossible to keep track of unless you use a tool like Mention.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For businesses with a content-heavy marketing strategy, the ability to find and share content from other sources &#8211; without searching &#8211; is a major time-saver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Correcting false information<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As we\u2019ll see with all three of the companies in this post, transparency is essential. When you ask for donations and spend other people\u2019s money, you need to prove that what you\u2019re doing is worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ecosia takes this responsibility very seriously. \u201cMany people have questions about our business model. That\u2019s something we find very important, because we\u2019re trying to be as transparent as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>First, they publish financial reports on their website. But they also go out of their way to ensure that misinformation doesn\u2019t get out. As part of their monitoring strategy, they reach out to answer questions and correct false information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jacey monitors for misleading articles and comments and sets the record straight. \u201cIf somebody comments on an article that we haven\u2019t come across yet, I find it very important to say \u2018you can see our donation receipts here,\u2019 or \u2018we publish our business reports.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mention helps her easily identify these comments, anywhere online. \u201cThanks to Mention, I\u2019m able to say \u2018you can see our donation receipts here,\u2019 or \u2018we publish our business reports.\u2019 That saves us a lot of angry comments and distrust.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Doctors Without Borders<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Doctors Without Borders\u201450 Years of Humanitarian Action\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JA4lG9bfVgM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors Without Borders (also known as <a href=\"http:\/\/www.msf.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">M\u00e9decins Sans Fronti\u00e8res<\/a>) is a global humanitarian organization providing medical care in developing countries and war-torn areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They use Mention to track news, themes, and wider context about humanitarian emergencies online. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Track crises online<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most important monitoring goal for Doctors Without Borders is to <strong>stay on top of the news<\/strong>. They need to know what&#8217;s being said about major emergencies as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These updates can them become part of their communications strategy. As a nonprofit, it&#8217;s important to build awareness around these events, and show how DWB contributes. By tracking the news, they get a clear understanding of how the situation is viewed around the world, and can prepare their communications to suit this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mention lets them do this on social media, to get quick snapshots and identify individual voices. They also monitor the web more generally to track official news sources and blogs discussing these emergencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Understand public conversations to build a fuller picture<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctors Without Borders cares about people &#8211; that&#8217;s obvious. But it&#8217;s not just the countless lives saved that matter. They also need to know how people talk about major humanitarian crises, to better communicate their message.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They monitor conversations on social media and the web, in order to understand public views. Mention let them track both the changing context around humanitarian emergencies, as well as measuring the level of awareness of certain themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For them, it&#8217;s about seeing the wider context around social media conversations, and not just focusing on single mentions. To do this, they collect all mentions around a humanitarian crisis, then look for themes and topics that tell the story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They also identify influencers in this process. Mention lets them identify opinion leaders and quickly analyse the issues they discuss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em><a href=\"\/?page_id=5481\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Find more Mention success stories here<\/a><\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Earlham Institute<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Decoding Livings Systems at Earlham Institute\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jQ69s5XJa08?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Formerly known as The Genome Analysis Centre (TGAC), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.earlham.ac.uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Earlham Institute<\/a> is a nonprofit research facility. It uses genomics and bioinformatics to advance plant, animal, and microbial research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Translation: These are smart people trying to help us better understand DNA and genetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with the other organizations in this post, it works hard to prove the value of its research. It also needs to provide value to the groups funding it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Promoting research<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Like a lot of research institutes, they get their money from government agencies, which means taxpayers. So they have to work extra hard to prove the value of their research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This means promoting their work as much as possible. Digital Communications Manager Chris Bennett is responsible for this. \u201cWhen you get money from Government entities to do research, you have an obligation to communicate all the great work you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As part of this, they need an easy way to track their press. Mention helps them monitor the web and social media, then quickly categorize their results to add to their reports. \u201cBy being able to chop up information with Mention\u2019s tags, it allows us to report quickly on the impact we\u2019re having as an institute. We\u2019ve never had that ability before.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The strategy is fast and effective. \u201cPeople used to get press clippings. Instead, we can do it in about 15 seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Finding influencers<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris and his team also look out for important industry members to help spread their work. \u201cWe\u2019ve recently been able to identify some very influential individuals on social. We\u2019ve actually been able to approach them and ask them if they\u2019d be interested in contributing to our content.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"\/?page_id=620\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Influencers<\/a> can be hugely beneficial to any business trying to increase exposure. And Mention\u2019s influencer tools make this a very simple process. \u201cIt\u2019s working really well, and it\u2019s really easy. You can look at the dashboard and see immediately who\u2019s influential. Because we can then filter that out by tag, we can then build up a picture of who to talk to.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlham is already thrilled with the results. \u201cIt has almost immediately started paying off for us. It\u2019ll only get more and more successful as we move forward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Saving time and money<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, this is more of a happy benefit than a strategy. But non-profit organizations need to take care when they spend their money. And Earlham is a large, multi-disciplined institute with a small communications team. Any tool they use needs to be both time- and money-efficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For them, Mention fits the bill. \u201cWe used to spend hours and hours putting together these reports of RSS feeds and other things online. <strong>\u201cLiterally the time we\u2019re saving is like having a part-time member of staff.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the biggest benefit for Earlham is the price. \u201cWe need access to enterprise-level marketing and communication technology. We can\u2019t afford that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are some solutions out there that are about 10 times the cost and about 10 times worse. [Mention\u2019s] pricing, and the customization of account setup, are brilliant.
