In the mad dash to Christmas, shoppers are shopping, sellers are selling, and tweeters are tweeting.<br \/>\nMarketers have taken the period between Thanksgiving and Christmas and turned it into a out-of-control spending spree.<br \/>\nAnd who can blame them? <strong>This is what marketers do<\/strong>.<br \/>\nRemember when Taco Bell tried to invent &#8220;Fourth Meal?&#8221; Because apparently people aren&#8217;t eating enough during the three <em>traditional<\/em>\u00a0meals:<br \/>\n<iframe title=\"TACO BELL FourthMeal.com\" width=\"660\" height=\"495\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/c2WFcfN1eoU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nAnd since the biggest shopping weekend has just passed, it&#8217;s time to see what everyone was talking about on social media. Were they excited about the sales, or sick of all the hype?<br \/>\nWe wanted to take a closer look at what they&#8217;re saying. We also wanted to find out <strong>whether Black Friday and Cyber Monday actually matter to people<\/strong>, or if all this hubbub is just marketers marketing (as always).<br \/>\nHere&#8217;s what we found\u2026<\/p>\n<h2>A Busy Black Friday<\/h2>\n<p>Black Friday 2017 was a record sales day in the United States. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abc15.com\/news\/national\/record-5-billion-spent-online-on-black-friday-2017\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Americans spent $5 billion<\/a>\u00a0online in just 24 hours, up nearly 17% from last year. Foot traffic numbers (people visiting stores in-person) were down slightly, but overall spending was way up.<br \/>\nBefore we move to the social media buzz, you probably want to know what all those people actually bought.<\/p>\n<h3>Most popular Black Friday purchases<\/h3>\n<p>Here were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.fr\/us\/black-fridays-most-popular-items-online-2017-11\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the most popular items on Black Friday<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Apple AirPods<\/li>\n<li>Sony Playstation VR<\/li>\n<li>PJ Masks<\/li>\n<li>L.O.L. Surprise toys<\/li>\n<li>Hatchimals<\/li>\n<li>Colleggtibles<\/li>\n<li>Pok\u00e9mon Sun and Pok\u00e9mon Moon<\/li>\n<li>Nintendo Switch<\/li>\n<li>Xbox One X<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bizarrely, a few of those (including AirPods and Nintendo Switch) weren&#8217;t even discounted. Why would you subject yourself to the horrors of the holiday rush to pay <em>full price<\/em>?<br \/>\nEven guns saw a massive surge &#8211; The FBI received a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/post-nation\/wp\/2017\/11\/26\/guns-were-black-friday-must-haves-going-by-the-fbis-record-203086-background-check-requests\/?utm_term=.6c3a7e57f25e\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">record number of background check requests<\/a>.<br \/>\nSo clearly people were eager to spend their cash. People love bargains. So it makes perfect sense that the majority of social posts would be positive, rather than negative.<br \/>\nPersonally, <strong>I still would&#8217;ve expected to see a slight higher number of people complaining<\/strong>. This is also a <em>bad<\/em>\u00a0day for traffic, the malls are crowded, and stress levels are high. This should surprise nobody. For one, <strong>the whole point of Black Friday is that it&#8217;s the day after Thanksgiving<\/strong>. And for those of us not from or in the USA, there is no Thanksgiving.<br \/>\nBut there were still a sizable number of mentions from outside America. From Monday 11\/20 to Monday 11\/27 (Black Friday isn&#8217;t <em>really<\/em>\u00a0just one day, after all), <strong>about 35,000 of 88,000 total tweets came from the land of the free<\/strong>. That&#8217;s a smidgen under 40%.<br \/>\nIn other words, <strong>over 60% of all tweets containing the words &#8220;Black Friday&#8221; came from outside the United States<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThat seems a little surprising. But it appears to point to the fact that Black Friday has gone global. It&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thesun.co.uk\/money\/3944384\/black-friday-2017-start-end-date-weekend-retailers-deals-uk\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">one of the biggest retail events<\/a>\u00a0in Britain each year, and here in France you&#8217;ll find plenty of marketing around the event.<br \/>\nWhether or not Black Friday is the must-spend event that it is in the States &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/black-friday-2017-cyber-monday-consumers-usa-amazon-germany-strike-a8075646.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Independent says &#8220;no&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; it&#8217;s getting hard to find people who aren&#8217;t aware it exists. And that&#8217;s reflected in the social statistics.<\/p>\n<h2>Small Business Saturday &#8211; huh?<\/h2>\n<p>Here&#8217;s one that most people I&#8217;ve spoken to aren&#8217;t aware of. Small Business Saturday was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexpress.com\/us\/small-business\/shop-small\/faqs\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">founded by American Express in 2010<\/a>, but has since entered the mainstream somewhat. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/934507210385829888?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 25, 2017<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\nDespite being relatively unknown, &#8220;#SmallBusinessSaturday&#8221; was posted on social media 130,717 times in the week from November 20-27. Cyber Monday lets you shop from the peace and safety of your own home.<\/p>\n<h3>How many people were talking about it?<\/h3>\n<p>Online shopping keeps getting easier &#8211; remember web sales were way up for Black Friday as well. But how do they compare to each other?<\/p>\n<h3>Which holiday won the weekend?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you care about holiday marketing, you&#8217;ve probably already seen pronouncements that Cyber Monday is bigger than Black Friday. The numbers aren&#8217;t in (as of writing), but it&#8217;s already been called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheStreet\/status\/935260207751487488\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">biggest shopping holiday<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the calendar.<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which is bogus, because we all know that Singles Day is the clear winner:<\/span><br \/>\n<iframe title=\"Alibaba\u2019s Singles Day Smashes Own Record With $25 Billion In Sales | CNBC\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/gwGGrLpUkdg?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\nTangents aside, Cyber Monday tends to be the biggest online shopping day\u00a0<em>in the United States<\/em>. Normally when we analyze large numbers of mentions online, most of them come from Twitter. Here&#8217;s my best guess\u2026<br \/>\n<strong>Facebook is now firmly in the ecommerce game<\/strong>. You may not have noticed it, but you can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/business\/help\/912190892201033\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">add a shop section<\/a>\u00a0to your Facebook page and sell products (if you&#8217;re a business). You can also use the shop section, but let buyers check out on your main website.<br \/>\nHaving a quick look through some of those Facebook posts we collected, there are <em>a lot<\/em>\u00a0of &#8220;BLACK FRIDAY DEALS&#8221; to be found.
