{"id":21450,"date":"2019-02-07T12:19:45","date_gmt":"2019-02-07T11:19:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/mention.com\/blog\/?p=21450"},"modified":"2025-01-06T15:18:50","modified_gmt":"2025-01-06T15:18:50","slug":"superbowl-2019","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/superbowl-2019\/","title":{"rendered":"Super Bowl 2019: 10 Brands That Dominated the Ads"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>This past Sunday marked the 53rd edition of the&nbsp;highly-anticipated SuperBowl.<br> For those of us who aren&#8217;t familiar with the event, it&#8217;s an annual (<em>American<\/em>) football game where the Champion of the National Football Conference (NFC) plays against the champion of the American Football Conference (AFC).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_super_bowl.gif\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII super bowl\" class=\"wp-image-21382 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 292px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 292\/214;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>In other words, this is<em> the&nbsp;most important sports event of the year in the United States,<\/em> with an <strong>average of 100 million people watching the game at the same time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless you\u2019ve spent the last couple of days locked in a room with no wifi access &#8211; there is no way you could have missed all the coverage of the event across the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, the championship was between the <strong>Los Angeles Rams<\/strong>&nbsp;and the <strong>New England Patriots<\/strong>.<br> <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21394 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_score.png\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII score\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 611px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 611\/208;\"><br>And at the end, <strong>the Patriots won<\/strong>. This is the 6th Super Bowl in their history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Pretty. Big. Deal!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/marketing-strategies\/\" target=\"_blank\">Once again<\/a>, to break down what happened around the event, we decided @Mention to monitor the noise generated by the event on the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this, <a href=\"\/en?page_id=38301\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">we created an alert for it<\/a> a couple of days before the game. We ended up monitoring <strong>1 048 586 online conversations<\/strong>&nbsp;and discovered everything there\u2019s to know about the Super Bowl LIII. Let&#8217;s dive in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.21qiubvk9i6\">What did we listen to?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This year, we decided to focus on English conversations (regardless of the source country) including the terms \u201cSuper Bowl\u201d, \u201cSuperbowl\u201d or \u201cSBLIII\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"998\" height=\"622\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_super_bowl_alert.gif\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII super bowl alert\" class=\"wp-image-21434 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 998px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 998\/622;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Although this means we didn&#8217;t catch<em> all of<\/em> the conversations about the event, it\u2019s only fair to assume that 1 048 586 mentions represent a relevant pool of data to work with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Funnily enough, while the Los Angeles Rams lost the game, they accounted for 50.78% of the online conversation we monitored. This means that many brands will probably be willing to spend millions of dollars to <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/influencer-brand-advocates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">leverage his influence<\/a>&nbsp;in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.vw0pel6v0aap\"><strong>How did the internet feel&nbsp;<\/strong><strong>about <\/strong><strong>Super Bowl LIII?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe <em>worst<\/em>&nbsp;Super Bowl ever\u201d, according to&nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2019\/02\/04\/opinions\/super-bowl-pearlman\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a>.<br> \u201cA <em>fascinating<\/em>&nbsp;game\u201d, said&nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/nfl\/2019\/2\/3\/18209722\/super-bowl-2019-punting-record-johnny-hekker-ryan-allen\" target=\"_blank\">SBNation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So, which one is it?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While most of the mentions were neutral (about 85%), we observed a <em>lot <\/em>of <strong>negative noise<\/strong> coming from the internet.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_top_sentiment_g.gif\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII top sentiment g\" class=\"wp-image-21430 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1425px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1425\/801;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><em>To give you something to compare it with, here\u2019s our <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/event-monitoring-4-marketing-lessons-from-ces2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">CES 2019 analysis<\/a>. Only 0.7% of the conversations were rated negatively.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seeing so many negatively toned conversations, we decided to investigate, using Mention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.bax4o8tzpu6f\">One&nbsp;trend emerges: <strong>boycott and racism<\/strong>.<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_negative_topics_1.gif\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII negative topics 1\" class=\"wp-image-21422 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1000px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1000\/570;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>First, Colin Kaepernick \u2014former NFL player\u2014 <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/sports\/2019\/02\/05\/colin-kaepernick-thanks-rihanna-her-super-bowl-boycott\/\" target=\"_blank\">called for a boycott<\/a>&nbsp;of the event to keep on raising awareness on the racial injustice still impacting the American society in 2019. He has been a victim of injustice&nbsp;<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/news\/world\/americas\/us-politics\/taking-a-knee-national-anthem-nfl-trump-why-meaning-origins-racism-us-colin-kaepernick-a8521741.html\" target=\"_blank\">after he started to take a knee<\/a>&nbsp;during the American National Anthem in 2017, as a sign of protestation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Celebrities like Rihanna, Jay-Z, Cardi B, and Pink joined the boycott, by&nbsp;announcing they turned down the <em>Super Bowl Halftime Show<\/em>&nbsp;opportunity a couple of months before that.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_colin_kaepernick.png\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII colin kaepernick\" class=\"wp-image-21406 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 632px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 632\/845;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Other celebrities like Ava DuVernay also backed up the former NFL Superstar.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_ava_duvernay.png\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII ava duvernay\" class=\"wp-image-21390 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 630px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 630\/777;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Also, many asked to boycott the event after the police of the host city (Atlanta) apparently fatally shot 2 unarmed black men.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, to top it up, the game itself was not very eventful and was in fact the &#8220;l<em>owest-scoring Super Bowl ever\u201d &#8211;<\/em>&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2019\/02\/03\/sports\/patriots-super-bowl.html\" target=\"_blank\">NYT<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of the above explains why there was <em>so much <\/em>negatively toned conversations before, during and right after the event.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_patriots_lowest_score.png\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII patriots lowest score\" class=\"wp-image-21424 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 502px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 502\/196;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>All in all, the game was <em>not<\/em>&nbsp;exactly riveting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For that, there\u2019s the Halftime show <em>and <\/em>the Super Bowl commercials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.8bt9hd8l54kc\"><strong>A controversial halftime show<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This year, Maroon 5, Travis Scott and Big Boi turned the stadium into a concert arena during halftime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The pop band led by Adam Levine accounted for most of the conversations (76.06%).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_halftime_show.png\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII halftime show\" class=\"wp-image-21404 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1034px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1034\/668;\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Now, if we put the neutral mentions aside, most of the conversations about the band were in fact negatively toned.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter is-resized\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/top_ads_brands_super_bowl_LIII_halftime_maroon5_sentiment.png\" alt=\"top ads brands super bowl LIII halftime maroon5 sentiment\" class=\"wp-image-21438 lazyload\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 642px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 642\/743;width:321px;height:372px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>Adam Levine\u2019s explanation?
