Mentions are flooding in, making them hard to analyze effectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s yesterday\u2019s problem. Our new advanced Boolean queries <strong>make monitoring as precise as you need it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is for hardcore media monitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What you can do with Boolean operators<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Boolean queries let you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Broaden or narrow your alert as much as you like<\/li><li>Use 113x more search terms <em>per alert<\/em><\/li><li>Limit your alerts to certain countries &#8211; as many as you like<\/li><li>Narrow your alerts to certain websites<\/li><li>Find results with different spelling<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s especially great for large companies that are talked about all the time.<br>[Tweet &#8220;Boolean search lets you focus on the mentions you really want to receive.&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s also great for companies with generic names &#8211; like Mention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only is our name a normal English word, it gets used\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>the time on social media. People even use our exact Twitter handle (@Mention &#8211; tweet us!), because \u201c@mention\u201d is a standard Twitter term. Life is hard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Boolean, we can limit our results to only receive the mentions we want. For instance, we can use the \u201cnear\u201d command so that we\u2019re only alerted when \u201c@mention\u201d is closely followed by \u201cmonitoring\u201d or \u201capp.\u201d And we can use <em>20,000\u00a0characters for each alert<\/em>!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cool, but what\u2019s with the name?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/george-boole-boolean-search-904x1024.jpg\" alt=\"George Boole, the inventor of Boolean logic\" class=\"wp-image-7769 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 904px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 904\/1024;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You may be asking yourself, \u201cbut why \u2018<em>Boolean<\/em>?\u2019\u201d Let\u2019s talk history.<br><br>That dapper Englishman is George Boole (1815-1864). He was the father of five children. He was also \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/heavy.com\/news\/2015\/11\/george-boole-google-doodle-200th-birthday-scientist-mathematician-logician-philosopher-boolean-computer-science-photos-bio-death-family\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the father of the information age<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>George invented Boolean algebra (remember algebra?). This breaks down every calculation into \u201ctrue\u201d or \u201cfalse.\u201d Then you add these statements together using connectors like \u201cand,\u201d \u201cor,\u201d and \u201cnot.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you change \u201ctrue\/false\u201d to \u201czero\/one,\u201d you have binary code, which is essential in computing. Thus, George Boole is \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/history-computer.com\/ModernComputer\/thinkers\/Boole.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a founder of the field of computer science<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was a smart chap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But enough about George.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How it works: Boolean operators 101<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Mention-Mugz1-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Mention Mugz\" class=\"wp-image-7770 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/768;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Those \u201cand,\u201d \u201cor,\u201d and \u201cnot\u201d commands are the keys to Boolean search. Our \u201cassisted queries\u201d can already do this, for up to five \u201cands,\u201d five \u201cors,\u201d and five \u201cnots.\u201d<br>But Boolean lets us use up to 20,000\u00a0characters. We technically can\u2019t call it \u201cunlimited,\u201d but it\u2019s basically unlimited.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, it has lots of other cool features. Let\u2019s illustrate by making up a fake campaign. We\u2019ll call it \u201c<strong>Mention Mugz<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Not actually for sale, but I know a guy)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Geofilters<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Suppose Mention Mugz is a worldwide campaign. Our alerts can target specific countries using geofilters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMention Mugz\u201d\u00a0<em>and<\/em> \u201cNZ,\u201d for example. We\u2019ll only receive alerts when Mention Mugz are talked about in New Zealand. We can also exclude any country from our results if we\u2019re not interested in that market (we\u2019d never exclude New Zealand).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The <em>near<\/em> command<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>We anticipate a lot of buzz around our Mugz. But what if people don\u2019t use the exact phrase \u201cMention Mugz?\u201d <em>Near\u00a0<\/em>alerts you to mentions when two keywords are close together. We can listen for instances when \u201cMention\u201d and \u201cMugz\u201d are used in a sentence, but not next to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, \u201chave you heard about Mention\u2019s insane new Mugz? They\u2019re changing the hot drinks game!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We could also include \u201cmug,\u201d \u201cmugs,\u201d even \u201ccups,\u201d just in case the branding hasn\u2019t caught on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">URL filter<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>What if we want to focus on MySpace conversations? We\u2019re predicting a comeback, and are focusing our efforts there. We just \u201cMention Mugz\u201d\u00a0<em>and\u00a0<\/em>\u201cmyspace.com.\u201d Dead simple.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can even narrow down to sub-URLs, subreddits, and subforums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More complex alerts<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Mention-Mugz-Bookz-Penz-1024x768.jpg\" alt=\"Mention Mugz, Mention Bookz, and Mention Penz\" class=\"wp-image-7771 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1024px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1024\/768;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s where it gets really tricky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if we launch a whole range of office supplies? We\u2019ll call it \u201c<strong>Mention Stuffz<\/strong>.\u201d We have \u201cMention Mugz,\u201d \u201cMention Bookz,\u201d and \u201cMention Penz.\u201d<br><br>So we set up an alert for Mention Stuffz. But we have a weird marketing team who only wants to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>How the Penz are doing in Germany (\u201cMention Penz\u201d + \u201cDE\u201d)<\/li><li>How the Mugz are doing in USA (\u201cMention Mugz\u201d + \u201cUS\u201d)<\/li><li>How the Bookz are doing everywhere <em>except&nbsp;<\/em>UK (\u201cMention Bookz\u201d &#8211; \u201cUK\u201d).<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/media-monitoring-ninja.gif\" alt=\"Boolean search is for media monitoring ninjas\" class=\"wp-image-7772 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 499px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 499\/392;\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><em>And<\/em>, we can use the <em>near<\/em> command for each of those\u00a0<em>and<\/em> we can limit it to certain URLs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you can see, Boolean is strictly for media monitoring ninjas.<br>[Tweet &#8220;Boolean is strictly for media monitoring ninjas.&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is it hard to use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For mere mortals? Yes. But we have an onboarding team to set the whole thing up. They\u2019ll get you started, and help you make changes as you go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Plus, we\u2019ve already established you\u2019re a ninja.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wait, what happened to George?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Shouldn\u2019t a man that smart live forever? Sadly, in 1864, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irishexaminer.com\/property\/features\/have-a-look-inside-the-home-of-ucc-maths-professor-george-boole-336830.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he caught \u201ca chill.\u201d<\/a> In those days, a chill was essentially a death sentence. At that point, modern medicine was still \u201cfuture medicine.\u201d People thought that symptoms should be treated by doubling-down on their cause.
