Amp up your e-commerce experience<\/h2>\n<p>E-commerce now account for 11,5 % of total retail sales.\u00a0<em>This includes every single retail transaction (whether it\u2019s buying a TV, an apple or a t-shirt).<\/em><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20970 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/GRAPHICS.png\" alt=\"GRAPHICS\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1600\/1068;\" \/><br \/>\nNow, during the Black Friday Week, <strong>we shop differently<\/strong>.<br \/>\nAt the end of November 2018, the<a href=\"https:\/\/marketingland.com\/165-million-people-shopped-online-and-in-stores-over-black-friday-weekend-252602\"> <strong>National Retail Federation<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0(NRF) reported that 165 million people shopped either <a href=\"https:\/\/learn.g2crowd.com\/2019-retail-trends\">online or in-stores<\/a> or both during the Black Friday weekend, in the U.S.<br \/>\n<strong>But what\u2019s really interesting here is the behavioral breakdown<\/strong>:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>21% shopped in-store only.<\/li>\n<li>25% shopped online only.<\/li>\n<li>54% shopped both online and in-store.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20972 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/black_friday_deal_retail_statistics.png\" alt=\"black friday deal retail statistics\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 800px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 800\/398;\" \/><br \/>\nWhat this means is that 79% of the <em>Black Friday shoppers<\/em>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/marketingland.com\/165-million-people-shopped-online-and-in-stores-over-black-friday-weekend-252602\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shopped online<\/a>\u00a0at least once during Black Friday.<br \/>\n<em>It seems people finally got tired of lining-up outside stores <\/em><em>to<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><em>fight for the<\/em><em>\u00a0best deals.\u00a0<\/em>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-goods\/2018\/11\/20\/18105044\/black-friday-november-shopping-season\">Ray Hartjen<\/a>, a retail analytics expert at RetailNext:<br \/>\n&#8220;Ten years ago, you had people camping out for two or three days in advance&#8230;before the internet came around and changed the nature of shopping, brick-and-mortar \u2014 well, it was\u00a0<em>all\u00a0<\/em>brick-and-mortar back then \u2014 had to have these great sales to get people in the store. The more foot traffic, the better.\u201d<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20962 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/black_friday_deal_retail_topic_in_store.gif\" alt=\"black friday deal retail topic in store\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 480px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 480\/270;\" \/><br \/>\nNow the internet allows us to shop comfortably from our own home, or anywhere we want &#8211; this would also explain why the event resonated so <em>well<\/em>\u00a0this year.<br \/>\nSo the lesson is simply this: <strong>be sure to offer as good of an online shopping experience as in a physical store.<\/strong> Invest in designing better <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/great-user-experience\/\">user experience<\/a> and understand your customers better by <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/retail-brands-media-monitoring\/\">monitoring<\/a> what they&#8217;re saying about your brand online.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.93xccn30ocps\">2. <strong>Extend your online sales events<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/social-analysis\/\">social analysis<\/a>\u00a0we ran last year revealed a sudden peak of mentions exactly on Black Friday.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20968 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/black_friday_deal_retail_topic_in_store_last_year.png\" alt=\"black friday deal retail topic in store last year\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 944px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 944\/609;\" \/><br \/>\nOn the contrary, we observed a <strong>stable number of <\/strong><strong>Black Friday related conversations<\/strong><strong>\u00a0all week long<\/strong>\u00a0(averaging 300k mentions per day) this year.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20976 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/black_friday__cyber_monday_deal_volume.png\" alt=\"black friday cyber monday deal volume\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1600px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1600\/444;\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><strong>How come?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>Well, this year, retailers started to push their best <em>Black Friday<\/em>\u00a0deals on November 19th\u2026 which obviously kickstarted thousands of conversations involving customers, manufacturers, and retailers.<br \/>\n<img alt=\"\" \/>Another thing we learned this year is that people talk a lot more about Black Friday than Cyber Monday. But when it comes to spending their money, <strong>they <\/strong><strong>chose<\/strong><strong>\u00a0Cyber Monday<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h.4wcqfynhv52p\">People waited for the Cyber Monday deals<\/h4>\n<p>Maybe you\u2019ve already heard the news from the Mention Memo, but Amazon announced it had its biggest shopping day ever on <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/11\/27\/amazon-says-it-had-its-biggest-shopping-day-ever-on-cyber-monday.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cyber Monday 2018<\/a><\/strong>.<br \/>\nI was surprised at first, but this actually makes sense.<br \/>\nAccording to <em>Adam Smith\u2019s invisible hand<\/em>, the homo \u00e6conomicus (or the average consumer) will not buy if they know for a fact that prices can go lower.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20946 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/black_friday_deal_retail_invisible_hand.gif\" alt=\"black friday deal retail invisible hand\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 700px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 700\/700;\" \/><br \/>\n&nbsp;<br \/>\nThis tells us that people may start shopping around and comparing prices on Black Friday, but wouldn&#8217;t actually buy until Monday.<br \/>\nWith deals going from November 19th to November 26th, it\u2019s fair to assume that many consumers waited till the very last minutes to shop, <strong>resulting in a peak of sales during the Cyber Monday<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIt makes sense: why would you buy something right away if you knew had an entire weekend to get the deal?<br \/>\nFor this reason, it&#8217;s a good idea to extend your sales events:<br \/>\n1)<strong> Create content to tease your customers with the potential offers leading up to the sales event<\/strong><br \/>\n2) Encourage them with even more discounts or special deals on the last day to motivate their purchase<br \/>\n<span style=\"font-size: 29px; font-weight: bold;\">3. <\/span><strong style=\"font-size: 29px;\">Understand what is being said online around your sales events<\/strong><br \/>\nWhile every retailer should be aware of what&#8217;s being said about their brand regularly throughout the year &#8211; <strong>it&#8217;s even more crucial to track the conversations taking place online during your sales events.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nWhy? Because you&#8217;ll not only be able to stay on top of which of your offerings are the most effective,<strong> but you&#8217;ll get unsolicited, real-time feedback about your sales event.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nHowever, digging through the noise sometimes requires a bit of manual work. To better understand what happened during the Black Friday, we created <strong>tags<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<em>With Mention,<a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/tag-mentions-automatically\/\"> tags are the easiest way<\/a> to identify conversations containing specific terms within the alerts you <\/em><em>already created alerts<\/em><em>.<\/em><br \/>\n<em>Each of the following tag represents groups of specific keywords, or topic clusters.<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"h.k00ft2gfsxtl\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20954 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/tags_black_friday_retail.png\" alt=\"tags black friday retail\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 813px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 813\/501;\" \/><em>Example: the term \u201cDeals\u201d, first on the list, contains all the mentions including keywords such as \u201cdeal\u201d, \u201cdeals\u201d, \u201coffers\u201d, \u201csales\u201d, \u201cdiscounts\u201d.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>By tagging the most mentioned keywords around your sales events, you would learn which of them has the most impact and take that into consideration for your next event.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.moep0dorugl1\">Knowing how you stacked up to your competitors<\/h3>\n<p>If you&#8217;re having a sales event or participating in one at the same time as your competitors, it&#8217;s important to know how you measured up against them.<br \/>\nAccording to our analysis 5 brands clearly stood out of the crowd during the Black Friday &amp; Cyber Monday.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Amazon<\/strong>: not surprising to see the retailer mentioned so much when most of the total deals came from it.<\/li>\n<li><strong>PlayStation<\/strong>:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>Sony worked together with most of the main retailers to sell bundles including their Playstation 4 and many popular games.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cdiscount<\/strong>: Cdiscount is the biggest French retailer. No numbers to share with you, but looking at the heatmap, Black Friday was a success for them.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Xbox<\/strong>: just as their direct competitor did with their Playstation 4, Microsoft was selling Xbox Bundles including the console and popular games at an attractive price.<\/li>\n<li><strong>iPhone<\/strong>:<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>this year\u2019s Black Friday was ideal for Apple fans in need of a new smartphone with iPhone 6S selling <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnet.com\/au\/news\/cyber-monday-2018-iphone-sales-now-free-iphone-xr-49-iphone-6s-apple-watch-series-4-discounts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as low as $49<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20956 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/cdiscount_retail_black_friday.png\" alt=\"cdiscount retail black friday\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 704px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 704\/368;\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.84qivq9xjlp1\">What were the <strong>most wanted products<\/strong>?<\/h3>\n<p>During a massive global sales event like Black Friday, it&#8217;s important for big box retailers to know what were the best selling items. This year was a major leap forward for mobile devices and e-commerce.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.r7vsc1gmpi3h\">4. <strong>Think m<\/strong><strong>obile first<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Our shopping habits are evolving<\/strong>.<br \/>\nThe <strong>National Retail Federation<\/strong>\u00a0(NRF) revealed that online shopping on Mobile saw a 18.3% y\/o\/y increase, accounting for 54.3% (46.6% on smartphones, 7.7% on tablets) of total retail traffic, and for <strong>35,9% of the revenue generated<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>online in the U.S<\/strong>. during the Black Friday Week.<br \/>\nThis is a breakthrough in terms of consumer behavior as we usually observe that only 20%\u00a0of the revenue is generated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.smartinsights.com\/ecommerce\/ecommerce-analytics\/ecommerce-conversion-rates\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">from mobile devices<\/a>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20978 lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/mobile-vs-desktop-black-friday.png\" alt=\"mobile vs desktop black friday\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 599px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 599\/366;\" \/><\/p>\n<h4 id=\"h.nzxsn57kpay4\"><em>Why is mobile still lacking behind in the first place? It&#8217;s a matter of trust.<\/em><\/h4>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/landing.adobe.com\/en\/na\/products\/experience-cloud\/ctir-3861-mobile-study\/index.html#\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adobe<\/a><\/em><em>\u00a0says that while <\/em><em>consumers tend to turn more and more to their mobile devices to shop online, <\/em><em>they still use them in priority for <\/em><em>browsing, especially if they are browsing through smaller e-commerce websites. L<\/em><em>arger merchants (those generating over $1 billion in annual sales) have more sophisticated technology in place to convert browsers into buyers.
