Even though we couldn&#8217;t physically experience it by being there, we were able to monitor all of the trending conversations around it using Mention.<br \/>\nBefore we jump into the actual analysis, let&#8217;s look at <em>how<\/em> we monitored all the relevant conversations &#8211; before, during and right after the event.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wearable-technologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CES-2019-predictions-1.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/www.wearable-technologies.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/CES-2019-predictions-1.png\" alt=\"Image result for ces 2019\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 700px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 700\/394;\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.q9a62x7zr4bb\"><strong>How did we monitor #CES2019?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>We didn&#8217;t listen to <em>all<\/em> conversations about CES 2019.<br \/>\n<strong>For one, it would not have been as relevant &#8211; due to the amount of noise we would have picked up along the way.\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nInstead, we focused on conversations specifically including the hashtag \u201c#ces2019\u201d, from Jan. 3rd to Jan. 14th.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.dy5movjgg451\"><strong>Why you need to monitor your events<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><em>Information is key. Those who possess it are given a significant advantage over their competition. <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/event-marketing-monitor-your-trade-show\/\">Monitoring events<\/a>, whether they are yours, or your competitors will provide you with three types of information:<\/em><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>People&#8217;s expectations<\/strong>: listening before a dedicated event will unveil what people expect from it, eventually helping event organizers to understand what\u2019s coming. These conversations usually start buzzing a couple of day before a given event.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Reactions and opinions real-time<\/strong>: knowing what happens in real-time will give you the opportunity to join thousands of relevant conversations \u2013positively and\/or negatively toned\u2013, and show your audience that you\u2019re available, and that you care.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Feedback and suggestions<\/strong>: we know that an average of 56% of consumers<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/consumers-share-positive-and-negative-experiences-equally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipsos.com\/en-us\/consumers-share-positive-and-negative-experiences-equally\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">share their opinion<\/a>\u00a0following a positive experience (52% following a <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/responding-to-negative-mentions\/\">negative experience)<\/a>. What stroke them during the event? What will they take home with them? What did they like? What did they love? What should be improved? What did people talk about the most? How did they talk about it? Were there any bad buzz? In this blog post, we&#8217;ll share what really stoked the public at CES 2019 as well as valuable tips you can use to boost your <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/combine-online-offline-strategies-build-communities\/\">event marketing strategy.<\/a><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.8q4y7yly5knn\"><strong>The top 10 trends and brands of #CES2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If I\u2019d had to rely on the newsletters I received during and following the CES 2019, I\u2019d say that the 4K rollable TV from LG and the latest 8K screens were the topics of most of the conversations.<br \/>\n<strong>Wrong<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIf they were among the most discussed trends, <strong>they didn&#8217;t steal the show<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>AI powered technologies did<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21164 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.13.02.png\" alt=\"Capture d e cran 2019 01 17 a 16.13.02\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 1142px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 1142\/427;\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.ijzu8qjpcrca\"><strong>Artificial Intelligence at the center of all conversations<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>While most consumers don\u2019t know they are already benefiting from<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/63-percent-of-people-do-not-realize-theyre-using-ai-according-to-new-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/63-percent-of-people-do-not-realize-theyre-using-ai-according-to-new-research\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Artificial Intelligence<\/a>, they certainly like to talk about it. This year, more than 10% of the conversations we analyzed in relation to the CES mentioned \u201c<em>AI<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.9vechfebl9w1\"><strong>5G to deploy by 2020<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>5G is going to be a game changer. It\u2019s expected to be<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/5g-vs-4g-4156322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lifewire.com\/5g-vs-4g-4156322\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">10 to 20 times faster than 4G<\/a>.<br \/>\nThat being said, it\u2019s not expected to be commercialized before 2020. Also, our phones are not 5G compatible, and it\u2019s only fair to assume that the first compatible devices will <em>not<\/em>\u00a0be cheap.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.5fo260qug03i\"><strong>The #FrenchTech stormed Las Vegas<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21166 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/how_to_evaluate_pr_success_ces2019_lessons_language.png\" alt=\"how to evaluate pr success ces2019 lessons language\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 357px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 357\/364;\" \/><br \/>\n17% of all conversations around the #ces2019 were in <strong>French<\/strong>. This is pretty impressive and surprising asFrench Speakers (only) represent account for 3% of the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=french+speaking+in+the+world&amp;oq=French+speaking+in+the+world&amp;aqs=chrome.0.0l6.3789j1j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=french+speaking+in+the+world&amp;oq=French+speaking+in+the+world&amp;aqs=chrome.0.0l6.3789j1j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">world\u2019s population<\/a>\u00a0(220M \/ 7.2B x 100).<br \/>\n<strong>How did this happen?<\/strong><br \/>\nThis is due to the highly active French startup conglomerate called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lafrenchtech.com\/\"><em>FrenchTech<\/em>.<\/a> Out of the 4500+ exhibitors,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gouvernement.fr\/en\/french-tech-out-in-force-at-the-las-vegas-ces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gouvernement.fr\/en\/french-tech-out-in-force-at-the-las-vegas-ces\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">420 were French<\/a>\u00a0(or about 9.33%).<br \/>\nTalk about creating buzz and awareness &#8211; this is incredible data that the marketing team behind FrenchTech can take back to their stakeholders, proving the their event efforts.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.86x7vmqfa7cr\"><strong>4K and 8K lagging behind<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This year, many brands (Sony, Sharp, Samsung, \u2026) presented their<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeanbaptiste\/2019\/01\/14\/the-best-tvs-of-ces-2019-from-8k-to-rollable-oled-display\/#3b67bfbb3ee0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/jeanbaptiste\/2019\/01\/14\/the-best-tvs-of-ces-2019-from-8k-to-rollable-oled-display\/#3b67bfbb3ee0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">8K screens<\/a>.<br \/>\nWhile the technology is impressive, experts remain skeptical regarding the actual usage of 8K in the near future. After all, 4K has been around for a long time, and we\u2019re only starting to see the first applications (TV, streaming, gaming, \u2026).<br \/>\nAnother notable innovation this year came from LG and their 4K, HDR rollable TV. This innovation certainly played an important part in <strong>placing LG in the top 3 of the most discussed brands during the show.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21162 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.15.11.png\" alt=\"Capture d e cran 2019 01 17 a 16.15.11\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 380px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 380\/427;\" \/><br \/>\nNow, it\u2019s not because something is being discussed a lot that it\u2019s all positive. Right?<img alt=\"\" \/><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.sgfjximl3wku\"><strong>How did the overall event echo online?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>On top of the 349K mentions we caught, only 2.4K were rated as <em>negative<\/em>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21170 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/how_to_evaluate_pr_success_ces2019_lessons_sentiment.png\" alt=\"how to evaluate pr success ces2019 lessons sentiment\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 553px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 553\/356;\" \/><br \/>\n<em>As per usual, most of the conversations are rated neutral. With over 21% of conversations toned positive, the 2019 edition of CES resonated really well.<\/em><br \/>\nNow, just because most of the conversations were positive doesn\u2019t mean that there were no hiccups.<br \/>\n<strong>Because there was.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>And in all honesty, it was something that was pretty bad for the event\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/improve-online-reputation\/\">reputation.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.klsr9gd19g2c\"><strong>Bad buzz that could\u2019ve been easily avoided<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We ran a topic analysis exclusively on these 2.4K negative mentions (meaning none of the positive and neutral conversations were screened in the process).<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21156 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/how_to_evaluate_pr_success_ces2019_lessons_sentiment_negative.png\" alt=\"how to evaluate pr success ces2019 lessons sentiment negative\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 586px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 586\/339;\" \/><br \/>\nIt turned out that half of these mentions included the following hashtag: <em>#cesgenderbias<\/em>.<br \/>\nWhat was this about?<br \/>\n<strong>A startup named Lora DiCarlo won a CES <\/strong><strong>Robotics Innovation Award<\/strong>\u00a0for their sex toy for female that was apparently \u201c<em>the holy grail of femail vibrators<\/em>\u201d.<br \/>\nBut a couple of days after that, the award was taken away from them because their innovation was judged too obscene by the jury.<br \/>\nAs you can imagine, this ignited a PR fire.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/elcokolo\/status\/1083116023572623360\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"628\" height=\"391\" class=\"wp-image-21160 aligncenter lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51.png\" alt=\"Capture d e cran 2019 01 17 a 16.20.51\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51.png 628w, https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51-300x187.png 300w, https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51-450x280.png 450w, https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51-187x116.png 187w, https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51-24x15.png 24w, https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51-36x22.png 36w, https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/01\/Capture-d_e_cran-2019-01-17-a_-16.20.51-48x30.png 48w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 628px) 100vw, 628px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 628px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 628\/391;\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nYou can find the whole story narrated by Lora Haddock, Founder and CEO of Lora DiCarlo<a href=\"https:\/\/loradicarlo.com\/pages\/cesgenderbias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/loradicarlo.com\/pages\/cesgenderbias\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">right there<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h.dg6jbqwxaecv\"><strong>4 marketing lessons we learned from monitoring #CES2019<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"h.s98zhy76umd7\">1. There\u2019s nothing like a good newsjack.<\/h3>\n<p>The purpose of<a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/monitoring-for-newsjacking\/\">\u00a0n<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/monitoring-for-newsjacking\/\">ewsjacking<\/a>\u00a0is to get media and social attention for your brand by exploiting breaking news and adding your own spin to it.<br \/>\nWhich is exactly what <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2019\/1\/5\/18169781\/apple-google-privacy-troll-billboard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Apple did<\/a>\u00a0right before the CES. Dress to impress<\/h3>\n<p>No one really anticipated the FrenchTech wave this year. Not even the French media. The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldunet.com\/web-tech\/start-up\/1420503-ces-2019-overdose-de-french-tech-a-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.journaldunet.com\/web-tech\/start-up\/1420503-ces-2019-overdose-de-french-tech-a-las-vegas\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Journal du Net<\/a>, one of the main French Tech\/Internet focused online publication even used terms such as \u201cOverdose\u201d and \u201cDisproportionate\u201d to qualify the amount of represented French companies in Vegas.<br \/>\nBut, at the end of the day, the tech world will remember the presented french technologies. And that\u2019s what matters the most.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.xjf11ym0whqc\">3. Don\u2019t ignore negative reviews<\/h3>\n<p>Never judge a book by its cover. This year\u2019s CES was once again really well received by the public. With the exception of the bad buzz mentioned earlier in this blog post.<br \/>\nIt\u2019s important to note that, as of today, this bad buzz was <em>not <\/em>addressed at all by the CES organization. Giving it more fuel to grow and later backfire at the organizers.<br \/>\nIf responded to early on, brands can <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/bad-reviews\/\">actually benefit from negative reviews.<\/a> In fact, if you need convincing, we recently wrote a blog post in which we share 5 reasons to<a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/bad-reviews\/\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/bad-reviews\/\">turn bad reviews into opportunities<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"h.ulyq3gjdmwnq\">4. It\u2019s 2019. Think before you speak.<\/h3>\n<p>This 4th lesson is more of a personal opinion I\u2019d like to share with all marketers and PR professionals trying to build their brand.<br \/>\nWe (humans) are able to <strong>re-use space rockets<\/strong>.<br \/>\nWe can <strong>make colorblind people see colors.<\/strong><br \/>\nWe let <strong>surgeon robots <\/strong>operate on people.<br \/>\nYou get the picture. Despite our many flaws, what we are able to create is amazing.<br \/>\nAnd yet, we &#8211; as a society &#8211; still need to fight for an equal recognition of all people. For a show that should lead the way and be 100% focused on the future, the #CESGenderBias scandal unfortunately revealed that it\u2019s not.<br \/>\nWhich leads me to ask the following question to CES\u2019s <em>Robotics Innovation Award<\/em>\u00a0jury: <em>where does an innovation stops being an innovation?<\/em><br \/>\nHopefull, CES will take into account what happened this year and be more open in terms of gender-focused products for next terms.<br \/>\nTo end on a positive note, we saw so many cool things this year at CES.
