Case in point: media coverage of the Facebook and Instagram outage last month lasted days longer than the outage itself.<br>But <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/agencies-build-marketing-reach-online\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">scaling a digital agency<\/a> might be even more difficult than scaling the products your clients create.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you\u2019re growing <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/improve-client-relationships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a service-based business<\/a>, there are more parts involved in your growth engine than there are with products. (I\u2019m sorry, that joke was calling to me.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>So how can you start hitting the accelerator on your marketing agency\u2019s growth engine without the fear of driving the whole car into a brick wall?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To keep your growing pains as minor and manageable as possible, make sure you keep the following in mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.43069cayihe7\">1. Solve one specific problem<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Saying \u201cyes\u201d to anything you could possibly do is a great way to get your first few clients. Monitoring? Sure! Social media management? Sure! <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buzzstream.com\/\">Influencer outreach?<\/a> You\u2019d be happy to!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the more your agency grows, the more things you need to say \u201cno\u201d to. That\u2019s right, friends! We\u2019re talking about niching down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes too many resources\u00a0to try to be everything to everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trying to scale this way, you\u2019d either need to build a team of employees who are all \u201cmeh\u201d at everything, or work with lots of specialized experts, in which case you\u2019d need more people and have less work for each of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Neither option sounds too appealing, does it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But don\u2019t get scared off by the thought of niching your agency. It doesn\u2019t have to be the boring task you\u2019re imagining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Niching down doesn\u2019t mean you only need to provide a single service and do the same specific thing for every client day in and day out, over and over and over.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you don\u2019t need to narrow your positioning all the way from \u201cdigital marketing agency\u201d to \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/instagram-stories\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Instagram stories<\/a>&nbsp;agency\u201d, or from &#8216;<a href=\"https:\/\/mobilemonkey.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">mobile marketing agency<\/a>&#8216; to &#8216;Twitter ads agency&#8217; (although I\u2019m sure there are plenty of clients looking for that).<br>It just means you\u2019re choosing one problem to solve, even if you\u2019re addressing it from multiple angles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you might choose to go from all digital marketing to a focus on social media content. Your target clients want to focus their content marketing on organic social media and blogging. Instead of thinking about providing services, look at the larger problems you solve for your customers. This might show you ways to scale that don\u2019t even involve new clients!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.checkdomain.net\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Checkdomain<\/a>&nbsp;started off as a domain registrar. But once they started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.duda.co\/case-study\/checkdomain\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">considering the larger problem<\/a>&nbsp;they were helping their clients with (launching an online business), they found additional services to offer their existing clients. They now help their clients register domains, build websites, encrypt them, and optimize them for search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference between solving a problem with multiple activities, and offering everything and anything, is that your services are still organized into a natural customer journey, which helps processes organically form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h.1a85o0ktv7yp\">2. Create processes before you need them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Another must-have for scaling is clear and organized processes&nbsp;for everything, especially <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/best-reporting-tools-for-agencies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">client-facing activities like reporting<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of why offering anything and everything is so ineffective, is because it doesn\u2019t let your team find a groove.
