But once you\u2019ve read the rest of this post and built your competitor monitoring dashboard, here are a few things you can use it for:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Marketing strategy<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Monitor their profiles to see their social media and engagement strategies. Look at what kind of content they\u2019re creating, how it\u2019s distributed, and who\u2019s linking to it. Since they knew they were just as outstanding in that category, the next year they were able to nominate themselves and get their own press!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Business development<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>See what consumers think of your competitors\u2019 products and how they handle customer support. If you see an unhappy customer, it could even be a <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/media-monitoring-for-sales\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sales opportunity<\/a>!<br> Ecommerce logistics company <a href=\"http:\/\/www.owd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">One World Direct<\/a> has Mention alerts set up to monitor for unhappiness about their competitors. You\u2019re curating info from all your competitors, and all the places they\u2019re talked about, in one place.<br> It also lets you use advanced filters and optimize your results, so you\u2019re only receiving competitor mentions that will help move you towards whatever your goal for tracking them is.<br> Of course, that\u2019s as long as you have your alerts set up well. So what\u2019s the best way to go about it?<br> Today, we\u2019ll talk about two methods to track competitors: one\u2019s more <strong>beginner<\/strong>, and the other\u2019s a little <strong>advanced<\/strong>.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beginner method<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>Before we get started, know that <strong>every alert should have only one goal.<\/strong> One that\u2019s more specific than \u201ctrack competitors.\u201d<br>\r\nWhat are you tracking them for?<br>\r\nAn example might be tracking your competitors for product complaints.<br>\r\nWhat you\u2019ll do here is <strong>create a bundled alert that can track up to 5 competitors.<\/strong>\r\n<br>\r\nThis option\u2019s great for a few different scenarios. If you\u2019re just getting started with monitoring, something simple like this is easy to digest until you\u2019re more familiar with the tools.<br>\r\nThere might also be a few competitors that you want to keep an eye on, but don\u2019t necessarily watch constantly. You could use the advanced method below for your main competitors, and this one for the extras to track less closely.<br>\r\nHere\u2019s how it goes:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>During the alert creation process, enter the first competitor as the main keyword.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Click on \u2018Advanced Settings.\u2019<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Add up to 4 other competitors as \u201cor\u201d keywords.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Include an \u201cand\u201d keyword that narrows in on the topic you\u2019re looking for conversations about.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Select which sources you would like to look at.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\">\r\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" width=\"624\" height=\"490\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Mention-alert-creation.png\" alt=\"Mention alert creation\" class=\"wp-image-64823 lazyload\" data-srcset=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Mention-alert-creation.png 624w, https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/Mention-alert-creation-300x236.png 300w\" data-sizes=\"(max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 624px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 624\/490;\" \/>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>So if I were looking for product complaints, I might set up an alert like this:<br>\r\n<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Advanced method<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you\u2019re ready target your monitoring and <strong>get really in-depth with your alerts<\/strong>, you can get tons of insights.<br> This method, to <strong>create dedicated <a href=\"\/?page_id=22975\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">alerts for competitors<\/a>\r\n<\/strong>, is best for direct competitors you want to track really closely. For more indirect competitors in your niche, the beginner method may really be all you need.<br> The process is pretty much the same, but can go further:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Use a competitor name as your main keyword.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Add <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=Rvl78O9H5eU\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cand\u201d and \u201cor\u201d keywords<\/a> to filter out noise that\u2019s unhelpful to your goal.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Exclude certain keywords that to block mentions that otherwise fit the criteria but still aren\u2019t relevant.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n\t\r\n\t<li>Select the sources you want to monitor.<\/li>\r\n\t\r\n<\/ol>\r\n\r\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\r\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\">\r\n\t<img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/track-competitors-dedicated-alerts.png\" alt=\"track-competitors-dedicated-alerts\" class=\"wp-image-6997 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 916px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 916\/519;\">\r\n<\/figure>\r\n<\/div>\r\n\r\n<p>\r\n<br>\r\nWith this method, I\u2019d be able to create an alert that looked at my competitor\u2019s name, along with several \u201cand\u201d keywords indicating a product problem. Much easier than if you were manually collecting info in a word document or spreadsheet!<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>If you used <strong>the beginner method<\/strong> for any of your alerts, all of your info will be within one alert report.
