I had no idea if anyone would listen, or if there was even an audience for a podcast on a topic as specific as SaaS analytics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>It was a pure content marketing experiment<\/strong> &#8211; something to try and see if it got results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, after 30 episodes, more than 30,000 downloads, and multiple podcast-influenced deals for <a href=\"http:\/\/insightsquared.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">InsightSquared<\/a>, I can confidently say that our little experiment was a success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the downloads and dollars don\u2019t fully encompass everything the podcast has done for our business. To launch the podcast, <strong>you have to start strong and interview the leading names in your space.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luckily, a podcast is the perfect cold ask. It\u2019s flattering, takes a minimal time commitment from the influencer, and offers a valuable and long-lasting piece of content. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because podcasting is still an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amplifimedia.com\/blogstein\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">exciting and rapidly-growing medium<\/a>, even high-profile influencers are often willing to appear as guests on industry podcasts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Ramp, one of our earliest episodes was with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saastr.com\/saastr-podcast-on-million-dollar-insights\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SaaS Venture Capitalist Jason Lemkin<\/a>. He has a huge audience of rabid fans, and his episode continues to be one of our most popular a year later &#8212; gaining new downloads every single week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By starting with such a well-known name, Ramp quickly gained a solid reputation in the SaaS world. After an hour-long, in-depth interview with an influencer, it\u2019s almost hard<em>not<\/em>to build a relationship. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll learn something new, your listeners will love the episode, and &#8211; most importantly &#8211; your guest will have a positive and highly personal experience with your company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Make it win\/win<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You have to remember that <strong>the podcast isn\u2019t all about you and your company.<\/strong> If you\u2019re too selfish in your promotion of the podcast, you won\u2019t continue to book high quality guests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you interview a top influencer, make sure they\u2019re also gaining value from the experience. It\u2019s a symbiotic relationship &#8211; you\u2019re reaching their audience, and they\u2019re reaching yours. Whether they\u2019re trying to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insightsquared.com\/2016\/02\/podcast-aaron-ross-on-overcoming-founders-fomo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">promote a new book<\/a> or raise the profile of their brand, they should gain something tangible from appearing on your podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Make your podcast a symbiotic relationship&nbsp;&#8211; you and your guest both win. &#8211; @CaraHogan27&#8221;]<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is obviously tougher to do when you\u2019re just starting out. When Ramp was brand new, the podcast only had a few hundred subscribers &#8211; nothing to brag about. I was often at a loss when pitching to prospective guests, since I couldn\u2019t impress them with data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, I pitched the podcast as free content. If they were willing to give me just an hour of their time, I provided them with everything they needed:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A highly-edited and high-quality podcast episode<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A short blog post*<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Social media content to share easily<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>*Pro tip:<\/strong> I send every podcast guest a short blog post they can publish on their own website, with the SoundCloud embed code. This makes it easy for the guest, and the podcast gets the benefit of a <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/tools-to-monitor-backlinks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">link back from a high-profile website<\/a>, driving new traffic to the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that top influencers are insanely busy, and they\u2019re always looking for great content to boost their brand, without too much effort on their part. This pitch worked wonders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People were happy to come on the podcast, and happy to promote their episode once it published. <strong>I made sure that being a guest on Ramp was easy, valuable, and even a little fun.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Track your podcast&#8217;s success<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Every podcast starts out with nothing &#8211; no listeners, no visibility, and no idea who is really listening. Unfortunately, podcasts remain one of the most difficult types of content to track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>[Tweet &#8220;Podcasts remain one of the most difficult types of content to track. &#8211; @CaraHogan27&#8221;]<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The analytics solutions available for podcasters today are severely lacking in detail.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image size-full wp-image-7544\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" data-src=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/03\/Podcast-Analytics.png\" alt=\"Podcast Analytics\" class=\"wp-image-7544 lazyload\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 317px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 317\/516;\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Who are these listeners? The data isn\u2019t available.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>There are no UTM codes for audio, so it\u2019s tough to know if you\u2019re reaching the right audience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see the total number of downloads, but you have no idea who those listeners are or whether they listened to one minute, or the whole episode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This inability to track success makes it incredibly difficult to prove the business value of a podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When I first started Ramp, I relied heavily on anecdotal stories from our sales team to tell me when prospects engaged with the podcast. Sales reps would simply email me and say, \u201cSales VP X is a big fan of the podcast.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While it was great to hear we were reaching our target audience, I couldn\u2019t tell how big our reach really was, or if it really had an impact on our business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once I realized the massive benefits of podcasting for influencer marketing, the ROI became much more clear-cut. I worried less about tracking listener data and refocused my energies on influencers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s much easier to prove a podcast\u2019s value when you can show that you\u2019ve interviewed 20 influencers in your industry, all of whom have shared the podcast to a combined audience of more than 500,000 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By focusing on influencer marketing first, you\u2019ll then see your audience numbers improve. Much like <a href=\"http:\/\/www.insightsquared.com\/2015\/12\/vc-influencers-top-saas-metrics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">monthly recurring revenue in SaaS<\/a>, <strong>podcast growth has a tendency to compound over time.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you start out with just 3 episodes, 300 downloads seems like a lot. Each time you publish a new episode, the numbers grow. Each influencer shares their personal episode, and some of their fans become new listeners of your podcast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll start to see more and more people go back and \u201cdiscover\u201d your older episodes. The download numbers will start to pile up, leading to more and more growth, making it easier and easier to attract top influencers as guests. Once you hit that point, your podcast is on the right track.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Are you up for the challenge?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, I won\u2019t lie &#8211; podcasting is hard work. If anyone tells you otherwise, they\u2019re probably paying someone else to do the editing, scheduling, and writing that it takes to produce a great show.
