It&#8217;s like having custom hashtags, just for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Create a handful of useful searches and revisit them each week. This is an easy way to follow conversations in your specific niche.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Option 2<\/strong>: use <a href=\"\/en?page_id=22893\">a monitoring tool<\/a>. These take all of the work out of <a href=\"\/en?page_id=22972\">social media listening<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Set up alerts just like you&#8217;d build an advanced search. Receive daily reports about conversations on social media, plus real-time alerts when keywords are trending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For social media, our favorite tool is obviously <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/\">Mention<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Talk with your followers, not at them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Buffer&#8217;s Kevan Lee says you need to <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bufferapp.com\/social-media-marketing-voice-and-tone\">know the difference between \u201c<em>voice<\/em>\u201d and \u201c<em>tone<\/em>\u201c<\/a>. Think of voice as your brand&#8217;s personality \u2013 a core part of its identity \u2013 and tone as your brand&#8217;s mood from day to day. As they explain it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cVoice is a mission statement. Tone is the application of that mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Voice doesn&#8217;t change \u2013 this is how you want your brand to be represented, always. But tone changes with context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You also can&#8217;t always be selling.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter is a giant chat room. The Twitter community is there for online discussions, jokes, or education. And you can&#8217;t spend all your time talking about yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some suggestions to help you balance promotion with other content:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/socialmediatoday.com\/content\/8020-rule-why-just-20-your-social-media-content-should-be-about-your-brand\">80\/20 rule<\/a>: 20% of your content can be promotional, but 80% of your content should be interesting, around trending topics, and engaging to your audience.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/heinzmarketing.com\/2011\/10\/the-5-3-2-rule-for-social-media-content\">5-3-2 ratio<\/a>: Five relevant pieces from others, three non-promotional from you, then two promotional posts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/tippingpointlabs.com\/twitter-is-dead-long-live-twitter\">4-1-1 rule<\/a>: Four pieces from others \u2013 plus one retweet \u2013 for every promotional tweet you send.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Focus on offering value to your Twitter followers \u2013 that&#8217;s what matters. Choose a ratio that makes sense to you, and try to keep to it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Use relevant hashtags<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Relevant hashtags are Twitter&#8217;s way of bundling information together by keyword.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People <a href=\"https:\/\/mention.com\/en\/blog\/hashtag-tracking-tools\">following hashtags<\/a> are interested in that content. If your content suits one, you&#8217;ll reach your target audience that&#8217;s keen to engage with it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to get the most from hashtags, check out Danielle Prager&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/rivaliq.com\/blog\/top-10-hashtag-best-practices\">hashtag best practices<\/a>. Some of her key tips are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Never use more than three hashtags per post.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Keep them short. #LongStringsOfWordsAreAnnoying.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The more precise, the better.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Make them easy to remember and easy to spell.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If you&#8217;re creating a campaign hashtag, be original.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, a word of warning: don&#8217;t try to piggyback on irrelevant hashtags; you&#8217;ll look foolish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Know when to tweet<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Twitter is time-sensitive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even with Twitter&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.twitter.com\/2016\/never-miss-important-tweets-from-people-you-follow\">new algorithm<\/a>, only the beginning of the user&#8217;s stream is affected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it&#8217;s optional. Toy brands prefer after-school slots when their target audience is watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Likewise, you&#8217;ll make the greatest impact on Twitter when your target audience is engaged.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use tools like <a href=\"https:\/\/audiense.com\/\">Audiense<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/moz.com\/followerwonk\">Followerwonk<\/a>, and Mention to find out when your target audience is engaged. Realize less isn&#8217;t more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Twitter is a \u201cmicroblogging\u201d site.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It would make sense that Twitter content should be shorter than posts on other social networks. Not exactly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Buffer and SumAll teamed up to make <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bufferapp.com\/optimal-length-social-media\">this monster infographic<\/a> showing the optimal length for posts on various social networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, Facebook posts with around 40 characters see the highest engagement. Use images<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Buffer found that visual content <a href=\"http:\/\/convinceandconvert.com\/content-marketing\/9-best-from-buffer\">triple the rate of retweets<\/a>, and nearly double the rate of likes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And because images take up Twitter real estate, your message becomes more prominent with a picture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if you don&#8217;t have good, original images to share?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create \u201cquote pictures\u201d<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One Twitter study found that pictures lead to 35% more retweets and that quotes increase retweets by 19%. I&#8217;m no math magician, but 35% + 19% = billions!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or maybe Twitter growth doesn&#8217;t work like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The point is, <strong>combine quotes and visual content for maximum impact.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are plenty of tools that&#8217;ll help you do this.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/canva.com\/\">Canva<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/pablo.buffer.com\/\">Pablo<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/picmonkey.com\/\">PicMonkey<\/a> are all popular choices. Quote pictures are simple to make and are sure to increase engagement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Be personal<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>When appropriate, name the person tweeting. They sound like people.
