Introducing Mention Spike
Our latest feature, Spike, helps you take action. When a topic you’re monitoring is getting more mentions than usual, we’ll send you a notification – a spike.
If you don’t have time to keep checking your dashboard, spikes are an easy way to keep up with important activity around your brand. You’ll get a short message (email or SMS*) as soon as buzz starts building.
We’ll tell you when the big stuff happens, as soon as it happens – so you can react.
* Texts are free, but subject to carrier fees.
Why use them?
Let’s say you check your mentions once a day, in the morning. If big news breaks after that, you’re the last to know.
Spike prevents that from happening, so you’re ready for:
- Damage control – Find out about a crisis immediately, so you can put the fire out.
- Campaign engagement – Let’s say your new campaign receives major attention. Join the conversation on social media.
- Competitor monitoring – If a competitor receives major press, you need to know. If it’s good, you’d better see what they’re doing right. If it’s bad, maybe you can capitalize.
How Spike works
We send a Spike when you have more mentions than expected. But what do we mean by “expected?”
Let’s ask our data scientist, Jérôme:
We look at the expected number of mentions, calculated based on a statistical model calibrated on your previous week’s historical data, and taking into account the hourly and daily seasonalities. You’ll get a Spike if you deviate too much from our expectations.
First, we find the alert’s average number of mentions from the past week. Then we look at the usual patterns for your alert at that time, on that day. Those are “seasonal” patterns. If your alert’s activity is way different than those, you’ll receive a Spike.
Imagine you’re monitoring a competitor, and they launch a new campaign on Monday afternoon. Everybody’s talking about it. We’ll send a Spike, so you know to keep an eye on the conversation.
But what if that same competitor is always talked about on Monday afternoons, and an increase is normal for a Monday? You wouldn’t receive a Spike in that case.
How to receive Spikes
1. Hit the settings icon at the top of your Mention dashboard. Under “Notifications,” the first thing you’ll find is Mention Spike:
2. Select how sensitive you want your Spikes to be. Your options are:
- Important increase: when your alert’s activity is much higher than its normal patterns.
- Very important increase: when the deviation in activity is huge – we’re talking big things happening.
